Quick installation guide
The purpose of this section is to provide you with basic informations on the structure and contents of the training Virtual Machine.
In order to simplify the installation procedure, a self-contained package comprising the various executables as well as the data used throughout the training are provided to download or can be viewed online at this link:
The package is an Oracle VirtualBox OVA
image which must be loaded into a running Virtual Box instance.
WARNING: The package is about 8.56 GB
big, therefore consider downloading it and setting up VirtualBox, as explained below, before the training sessions start.
Installing Oracle VirtualBox
Minimum Hardware Requirements

How to install the Virtual Machine
Install Oracle VirtualBox Software
- Download the executable accordingly to your current operative system
- Windows 10: VirtualBox-6.1.22-144080-Win.exe
- Linux: virtualbox-6.1_6.1.22-1440…buntu_eoan_amd64.deb
- MAC OSX: Mac OS X build instructions
Deploy the GeoNode VM OVA

Run the Oracle VirtualBox and select
Import Appliance
from theFile
menu -
Select the downloaded file as shown in the figure below

Click the
Next
button -
Leave all the
defaults
option, except for the destination folder; you will need to select a location with at least30GB
memory free -
Click the
Import
button and wait for the progress bar to be finished; it will require up to20 minutes
depending on your system -
If everything goes well, you should be able to se the new
Appliance
available from the Oracle VirtualBox panel
Start and test the GeoNode Virtual Machine

Select the GeoNode 3.3.x image and click on the
Start
button -
Wait for the system to startup, you should be able to see the
Ubuntu
desktop -
Open the
Chrome
WEB browser, enter the passwordgeonode
if is asks for, and go to the location:http://localhost/
The GeoNode Default Home Page
When accessing GeoNode you will be redirected automatically to the default home page; other than the GeoNode logo, you can notice different sections from this landing page
- A navigation bar presents a set of quick-access menu links
- There’s a small search box allowing you to perform quick content searches
- A registration link allows you to create a new GeoNode registered member
- A sign-in link allows you to login by using an existing GeoNode registered member
- A welcome text along with the main site title is presented to the user; this section can be customized eventually
- A big search box allows you to perform quick searches on the GeoNode contents
- An advanced search link allows you to redirect to a specific page for more refined searches
- This section summarizes the contents available on GeoNode and provides some shortcuts to the different data types
- A footer provides some shortcuts to the GeoNode main sections
- Copyrights and statemnts provides information on the portal maintainers; those links can be customized

A language dropbox allows to select the portal language translation among the available ones; this list can be reduced
NOTE: Since this is an Open Source project, the translations have been provided through the commuity contributions; those might be incomplete and wrong!
